The Language Leaders Speak!

Leaders Speak Differently

Language was the key development in the history of the human evolution. The history has all the evidences of the rapid advancements that took place right after the development of the language amongst our forefathers. It is till date the key instrument used by the great leaders of all times for leading nations and organizations ahead.

The Oxford dictionary defines language as “the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way.” However, the language I am talking about has a far greater meaning than what is so simply & beautifully defined by the Oxford dictionary.

I believe language is the mindset, the attitude, subtle understanding of the thoughts & feelings that are embedded in the combinations of both the words and emotions. It is a mixture of the words and intent (in which it is spoken, of course based on the understanding of what is required to be spoken).

All the great leaders have had this formula right on which they composed their speeches for their audiences. They all connected with the deeper mental and emotional needs of the listeners.

Many of the organization leaders I speak to have this formula missing in their communication with their co-workers, especially when they approach me to coach them. I have observed that the senior leadership in today’s time requires their co-workers to understand and speak the same language; the passion, emotions, and holistic understanding of why things have to be a certain way.

7 years ago I had a client who hired in his sales team a fresher with great energies and passion for bringing business to the organization. A few weeks later, I came to know that my client fired this new guy. After investigating a bit, my client informed me that ‘he messed up with a few new prospects and it wasn’t the way they did it in the organization. It wasn’t long enough for me to realize why this guy did all that, however, my next question was- ‘so, how do you do it here?’ My client explained it all to me for the next few minutes. The conversation followed by another question I asked my client, “did you share all this with this new guy?” The response was obvious- NO.

Now, after 11 years, the ‘new guy’ is still in very much touch with me, and now he has his own company, a highly efficient and prestigious one. I could see that he realized his natural gifts & talents of convincing people, which all could have been with my client had he focused upon ensuring and developing the right ‘language’ this guy required in order to communicate with the new prospects.

This poses a bigger question to the philosophy of leadership we inherently follow. The language I am refereeing to carries three basic components in it- The WHY’s, the HOW’s, and the WHAT’s.

Hence, leaders today must focus on the above three components to develop their organization and people. They must first ensure that people understand ‘why’ they have to communicate what they have to communicate, followed by ‘how’ it has to be communicated, and of course, with the very high degree of mindfulness of how much (WHAT) has to be communicated. This creates an alignment in the organization, without which, we will keep firing the most passionate and deserving candidates for the mistakes they never consciously commit.
